So when I met Avery, who is nine years younger than I am, I wasn’t surprised that she didn’t see much of herself in the images surrounding her either. I wanted to explore the reality of a teen like Avery and her new kind of American family from the inside. I felt that to tell this story authentically Avery would have to have a strong voice in the creative process, so we began the work of making this film together.
